Question Archive

What are my chances of getting pregnant? What are the risk factors affecting fertility?

Dr. Hananel Holzer, MD's Response

The answers to these questions really depend on a few important factors; specifically, your age and medical history.

  • A typical fertile woman at 30 has an approximately 20% chance of conceiving each month. That means that roughly 60% of those fertile 30-year-olds would conceive within 6 months, and about 90% within a year.
  • This figure drops dramatically as a woman ages, though, with the biggest drop occurring after 35. By the time she is 40, the average woman will have a 5% chance of conceiving each month.
  • Additionally, there are many other risk factors that could negatively affect fertility. These could include, but are not limited to, prior chemotherapy, sexually transmitted infections, heavy smoking or alcohol use, pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis (in females), or prior genital injury (in males).
  • If you are concerned about your fertility, you should speak with your family doctor or fertility specialist.
