Will taking testosterone supplements by injection cause permanent infertility in men?
Testosterone is the main hormone produced by the testes in men. It works in combination with other hormones from the pituitary gland (located in the brain) to maintain sperm production.
Testosterone replacement therapy is used in men who have little or no naturally occurring testosterone (a condition called hypogonadism, where "hypo" refers to "low," and "gonad" refers to "testis"). This condition may be present at birth or may be due to some other issue later in life.
The benefits of testosterone injection include the development or maintenance of male sexual characteristics (i.e., muscles, body hair, deep voice, etc.) and good energy levels and sex drive. The side effects include a decrease in testicular size, especially if the medication is taken for many years. If testosterone supplements are used appropriately, they should not cause permanent infertility.
Testosterone is needed in the testes to produce sperm. However, injections of testosterone in the body actually cause hormonal changes that can decrease sperm production. (This works in a similar way to a woman taking the birth control pill to stop ovulation.) The male hormones and testosterone production remain low for a few months after a man stops taking testosterone injections. The sperm count usually returns to normal within 4 months after stopping testosterone injections.
