Rise in STDs among elderly

New figures show that sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are on the rise in elderly people.

America's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 24 per cent of total AIDS cases are among senior citizens - which is up 17 per cent from 2001.

One reason experts attribute for the rise is because the elderly are not using condoms, because women who have been through the menopause will not get pregnant. Another factor could be medications like Viagra or Cialis, while another reason is thought to be a newly single life if the elderly divorce or are widowed.

A Harvard study found that 43 per cent of widows and 21 per cent of widowers had been diagnosed with an STD.
