German researchers say men are less susceptible to inflammatory diseases and allergies than women thanks to testosterone.

"It is mostly women who are affected by diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis or asthma," researcher Dr. Oliver Werz said in a release about the study, which appears in the current edition of the Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.

The study found men's cells react differently than women's to "inflammatory stimuli," and certain immune cells of women produce nearly twice as many pro-inflammatory substances than those of men.

The researchers say this information will help the development of new treatments and therapies for men and women.
