Put this in your pipe and smoke it: bongs and hookahs are just as bad for your lungs as cigarettes, according to a new study.
The findings debunk the widely held belief, among smokers and some doctors, that using a water pipe filters out many of the toxic or carcinogenic components of tobacco.
Scientists at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in Iran compared 57 water pipe smokers, 30 "deep inhalation" cigarette smokers and 51 "normal inhalation" cigarette smokers, along with 44 non-smokers.
Water pipe smokers showed respiratory symptoms nearly as severe as cigarette smokers.
Water pipe smokers reported chest tightness - 36.8% of them; in cigarette smokers, the figures were 40% and 29.4%.
And 21% of pipe smokers had a cough, compared to 36.7% and 19.6% of deep- and normal-inhalation cigarette smokers.
The study, which appears in the journal Respirology, did not say whether researchers took into account the type of tobacco smoked or how long participants had been smoking.
