Beef recalled

Sep. 17, 2012

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a warning Monday about various beef products that have been recalled due to possible contamination with E. coli.

The meat was used in products like burgers, meatloaf and sliders under the Kirkland Signature and Safeway brands, sold all over Canada. Edmonton-based XL Foods manufactures the products.

The CFIA said it hasn't received any reports of illnesses.

Food contaminated with E. coli may not look or smell spoiled, but consuming it can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses, the CFIA said. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases, E. coli can be deadly.
