| Valencell PerformTek iriver ON. (Valencell) |
Wearable fitness data trackers are a hot ticket at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but Valencell unveiled an interesting concept: a wearable fitness tracker that doubles as earbuds, meaning you won't have to bother with chest straps or wristbands, or clip-on devices. Rather, just play your music and go.
The PerformTek iriver ON headset uses the ear's physiology to gather vital health and fitness data by embedding sensors in a regular pair of earbuds. Some of the data that PerformTek sensors measure are heart rate, distance, speed, cadence, calories burned, and perhaps its boldest claim: VO2 max, or aerobic fitness level.
The device has a built-in oximeter that measures your heart rate by detecting the tiny changes in your skin colour that coincide with your pulse. It retails for $199 US and is set to be released internationally in March.

Also launched at CES this week is the Mio Alpha watch, which continuously monitors heart rate through a similar technology as the PerformTek and displays it in real time. The device was a hit on Kickstarter last year, raising three times its $100K goal. Geared to athletes, the Mio Alpha sells for $199 and is available in the US and Canada now -- with international shipping expected soon, according to the website.
