Botox stomach injections won't help you lose weight: Study

Not just for wrinkles anymore, Botox is being tested to treat a myriad of ailments, from migraines to foot pain. But the facial freezer won't help you shed kilos, as researchers say that while Botox injected into the stomach may help slow the movement of food in the stomach, it won't keep you from eating too much.

Previous findings have suggested that Botox stomach injections prolonged feelings of fullness, delayed gastric emptying, and reduced body weight, but the researchers of the latest study say that these studies weren't randomnized or placebo-controlled.

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic in the US recruited 60 obese patients in a double-blind trial to test how gastric Botox injections worked against a placebo. After 24 weeks, those who were given the Botox treatments showed no improvements in weight loss.

"On the basis of our findings, I would not recommend gastric Botox injections to people who want to lose weight," researcher Mark Topazian said in a statement. "There are some risks with this treatment and we found that there was no benefit in terms of body weight loss."

The findings were recently published in the journal "Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology."
