A new study claims to offer 'unique insights" into why doctors abuse prescription drugs.
The study, which was published in the October Journal of Addiction Medicine, says they often do so for "self-medication" - whether for physical or emotional pain or stress relief.
But many doctors said they used the drugs to "get high" while others said they used them to treat symptoms of drug withdrawal.
In anonymous discussions, the researchers discussed reasons for prescription drug abuse with 55 physicians in recovery.
The doctors were being monitored for substance abuse as part of their state's physician health program. Sixty-nine per cent of the physicians had abused prescription drugs, in addition to alcohol and illicit drugs.
