Eating foods that contain tyrosine — such as spinach, cottage cheese, soya or eggs — can improve your reaction time, a new study from The Netherlands has found.

Study participants were asked to do a repetitive task, then interrupted and told to look at a computer screen and press a button as quickly as possible when they saw a green arrow appear. They also had to ensure the button they pressed matched the direction of the arrow. If a red arrow appeared, the participants were to keep their hands off the keyboard altogether.

The participants did the test twice — one time after drinking a beverage that contained tyrosine, and once after drinking regular orange juice.

The participants performed better after drinking the juice with tyrosine.

The researchers said the study, which appears in the journal Neuropsychologia, shows consuming tyrosine-rich foods can help improve reflexes and speed up reaction times.
