Getting rewarded with points for loyalty programs just for working out is a strong motivator to get people into the gym, a Canadian pilot project found.

The project at 15 YMCA locations across Canada offered users Air Miles reward points if they worked out.

The project, which saw 46,000 gym users sign up, gave people 25 miles for registering, then one reward mile per two visits, and during a special promotion, 20 reward miles for three weekly visits in the months of September and October.

The project, which was also run by the Public Health Agency of Canada, found 63% of those who signed up worked out one to six more times per week than they did the year previous.

Overall, the YMCA saw a 6% increase in visits by those taking part in the project compared to the control group.

"Anything we can do to promote healthy living for our members is a win," Darlene Frampton of YMCA Canada said in a release Wednesday.
