Tap into your inner healing energy

There’s no escaping it.From cell towers to our growing collections of must-have wireless gadgets, we’re being bombarded by a constant surplus of electromagnetic radiation.

And it’s not healthy for us, says Jennifer Kries, a San Diego-based fitness expert (JenniferKries.com).

“I’m really convinced that there’s a higher incidence of cancer because we’re permeable beings and we’re confronted by this excess level of toxicity every day,” said Kries by phone to Keeping Fit.

But all hope is not lost. The key to defending against this technological toxicity, notes Kries, is learning to tap into your body’s innate healing potential and stimulate what the ancient Chinese dubbed as “wei qi” (pronounced way-chi) or protective energy. To picture it, think of the X-Men. “You can liken it to having an orb of protective energy around you … like when the arch-enemies of the super heroes get repelled by a force field,” explains the self-styled Taoist. “It sounds very sci-fi, but it’s very real.”

The admittedly complex meditative process involved in harnessing this natural force field is demonstrated on the “Waking Energy” disc of Kries’ latest DVD workout series, titled Hot Body Cool Mind: The Life Force Power System.

“Waking Energy is a means for people to turn the focus inward so that they can cultivate some connection between body and mind that I think goes beyond yoga and Pilates,” she says. “It’s a very high-level, sophisticated series of techniques, which I have made very accessible for people.”

Among the techniques that are a tad easier to explain in a newspaper column is a popular self-massage energy dance that Kries developed. “People get really excited about it because they literally massage their whole bodies from the crown of their head all the way down to the toes,” she says.

“As human beings, we are like reservoirs of our experiences. So when we have emotional trauma of any kind — we get angry, we get upset — that energy actually gets turned inward for the most part, unfortunately, and we need means to be able to move that through the body and out again so it can be recycled and transformed.”

Kries, credited with being the first to bring Pilates to a mass audience, points out that energy is everywhere — even in inanimate matter. But she’s most concerned with the energy in the human body.

“Essentially what I’m teaching people to do is to both stimulate and harmonize the energy in their meridian systems (the meridian system is the incredibly intricate network of invisible energy pathways in the body that were first discovered by Eastern adepts with acupuncture) and then also to cultivate and harmonize energy in the chakra system,” Kries says.

Her Hot Body Cool Mind DVD set features more than 10 hours of instruction, including a blend of Pilates, yoga and dance. The DVD provides ample opportunity to get physical because, as Kries sees it, electromagnetic radiation isn’t the only threat to our health.

“We’re not moving enough,” she adds. “We drive in our cars, and we take escalators or elevators — modern life is actually pretty deadly.”
