How do I use my asthma action plan?

You can start by downloading "My Asthma Action Plan" and printing a copy. Bring it to your doctor's visit so you and your doctor can fill it out together. Once your plan is complete, you're ready to use it!

To use your asthma action plan, monitor your symptoms and peak flow (see "Monitoring asthma symptoms") as directed by your doctor. These will tell you which zone you're in. Then, follow your doctor's instructions for that zone.

Your asthma action plan will have three zones: green, yellow, and red.

  • If you're in the green zone, your asthma is well controlled and you can continue your usual routine. Continue using your usual medications and monitoring your symptoms and peak flow.
  • If you're in the yellow zone, your asthma is getting worse and you're at risk of an asthma attack. Your action plan will have instructions for adjusting your medication doses and monitoring your symptoms and peak flow.
  • If you're in the red zone, you are having an asthma attack and need immediate medical attention. Your action plan will recommend that you seek medical attention immediately, and tell you what to do until help arrives.

Keep your asthma action plan with you and bring it to every doctor's visit so it can be kept up-to-date.

For more information about each zone and how to tell which zone you're in, see What's an asthma action plan?
