Chromium quick facts

What is it? Chromium is a trace mineral, meaning we need very small amounts of the nutrient.

Why do we need it? We need chromium to help our bodies to make use of fats and carbohydrates from the foods we eat. Chromium also aids in the metabolism of insulin and the synthesis of cholesterol. When deficient in chromium, a person may be more prone to impaired glucose tolerance.

How much do we need? For infants up to 6 months of age, only 0.2 micrograms (µg) each day is required. From 7 to 12 months of age, infants need 5.5 µg daily. After that, daily needs increase:

  • 1 to 3 years of age: 11 µg
  • 4 to 8 years of age: 15 µg
    Males
  • 9 to 13 years of age: 25 µg
  • 14 to 50 years of age: 35 µg
  • 51 years of age and older: 30 µg
    Females
  • 9 to 13 years of age: 21 µg
  • 14 to 18 years of age: 24 µg
  • 19 to 50 years of age: 25 µg
  • 51 years of age and older: 20 µg

Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding may require more chromium each day.

Vegetables and fruits

  • apple
  • banana
  • broccoli
  • onion
  • tomato
  • romaine lettuce
  • spinach

Meats and other animal products

  • beef
  • chicken
  • egg
  • liver
  • oysters
  • turkey
