Can atrial fibrillation be prevented?

You may be able to prevent atrial fibrillation (also known as AF or AFib) by taking steps to reduce your risk of heart disease and by living a healthy lifestyle.

By taking steps to live a healthy lifestyle, not only do you reduce your risk of heart disease and atrial fibrillation, but you are also headed towards overall better health.

A healthy lifestyle means reaching and maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet. Physical activity is important – make sure you total at least 150 minutes (2½ hours) of exercise every week. Before you start any exercise, check with your doctor to see what level of activity is safe for you. Get your nutrition from fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Avoid saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol.

Drink alcohol in moderation and find effective ways to cope with stress. Quitting smoking is also a healthy lifestyle choice.

It's also important to see your doctor regularly for check-ups. Your doctor will help ensure you are at your healthiest. To help you get started on the discussion with your doctor, use the Doctor Discussion Guide.
