How does Tylenol Elixir with Codeine work? What will it do for me?

This medication is used to relieve pain, and contains a combination of codeine and acetaminophen. Both codeine and acetaminophen belong to the group of medications known as analgesics (pain relievers). Codeine works by acting on the central nervous system. Acetaminophen works by raising your pain threshold.

How should I use Tylenol Elixir with Codeine?

Acetaminophen with codeine comes in a variety of different strengths and dosage forms. Dosing depends on the strength and dosage form being used.

Tablets: The recommended adult dose is 1 tablet every four hours as needed for pain.

Liquid: The recommended adult dose is 10 mL to 20 mL every four hours as needed for pain. For children, the recommended dose is based on body weight.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

The dose limits for the single and 24-hour dose as well the time interval between doses should be followed strictly as recommended by your doctor. This medication should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. This medication has the potential to become habit forming.

This medication should be stored in a cool dry place and kept out of the reach of children.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

This medication is available under multiple brand names and in several different forms. Any specific brand name of this medication may not be available in all of the forms listed here. What form(s) does Tylenol Elixir with Codeine come in?

Each 5 mL of elixir contains acetaminophen 160 mg and codeine phosphate 8 mg in a slightly viscous, clear red liquid that tastes and smells like cherry. Nonmedicinal ingredients: alcohol, citric acid, D&C Red No. 33, flavour, polyethylene glycol, sodium benzoate, sodium cyclamate, sorbitol and sucrose. Gluten-, lactose- and tartrazine-free.

Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

Who should NOT take Tylenol Elixir with Codeine?

This medication should not be taken by anyone who is allergic to acetaminophen, codeine, or any of the ingredients of the medication.
