How does Remeron RD work? What will it do for me?

Mirtazapine belongs to the group of medications known as tetracyclic antidepressants. Antidepressants are used to help relieve the symptoms of depression such as feeling low, sleeping problems, loss of appetite, and loss of interest in activities that you would normally enjoy doing.

When you have depression, certain chemicals in the brain are out of their normal balance. Antidepressants such as mirtazapine work by helping to bring the chemicals back into balance. Antidepressants usually take at least a few weeks to achieve their beneficial effect, so it is important to have patience and take the medication exactly as prescribed.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

How should I use Remeron RD?

The recommended starting dose of mirtazapine for adults is 15 mg taken once daily in the evening before going to bed. Your doctor may increase the dose to 30 mg after 1 to 2 weeks, depending on circumstances. The maximum recommended dose of mirtazapine is 45 mg daily.

Remeron RD® orally disintegrating tablets have been designed to rapidly disintegrate on the tongue and can be swallowed with saliva. It is important to handle these tablets properly. Ensure that your hands are dry when you remove the tablet from its blister packaging and then immediately place the tablet on the tongue. Note that tablets must be used immediately after removal from packaging. The tablets cannot be stored once they are removed from their packaging.

It is very important to take this medication exactly as prescribed. It is normal not to feel any different for the first 2 to 4 weeks of taking this medication. If you experience side effects, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before stopping the medication. If you forget a dose and remember the same day, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

What form(s) does Remeron RD come in?

15 mg
Each white, flat-faced, round, bevelled edge, orally disintegrating tablet, coded with "TZ1", with a characteristic orange odour, contains mirtazapine 15 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: aspartame (contains phenylalanine), citric acid, crospovidone, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, natural and artificial orange flavour, polymethyl acrylate, povidone, sodium bicarbonate, starch and sucrose.

30 mg
Each white, flat-faced, round, bevelled edge tablet, coded with "TZ2", with a characteristic orange odour, contains mirtazapine 30 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: aspartame (contains phenylalanine), citric acid, crospovidone, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, natural and artificial orange flavour, polymethyl acrylate, povidone, sodium bicarbonate, starch and sucrose.

45 mg
Each white, flat-faced, round, bevelled edge tablet, coded with "TZ4", with a characteristic orange odour, contains mirtazapine 45 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: aspartame (contains phenylalanine), citric acid, crospovidone, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, natural and artificial orange flavour, polymethyl acrylate, povidone, sodium bicarbonate, starch and sucrose.

Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

Who should NOT take Remeron RD?

Mirtazapine should not be used by anyone who:

• is allergic to mirtazapine or any of the ingredients of the medication
• has taken any MAO inhibitors (e.g., phenelzine, tranylcypromine) in the previous 2 weeks
