How does PMS-Cefaclor work? What will it do for me?

Cefaclor is an antibiotic that belongs to the family of medications known as cephalosporins. It is used to treat infections caused by certain kinds of bacteria. It helps to kill or control to growth of bacteria that may cause ear infections such as otitis media, lung infections such as pneumonia or bronchitis, throat infections such as tonsillitis, skin infections, or bladder infections.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

How should I use PMS-Cefaclor?

Adults: The recommended adult dose of cefaclor ranges from 250 mg three times daily to 500 mg four times daily with or without food. The usual adult dose is 250 mg every 8 to 12 hours. The maximum recommended dose is 2,000 mg (2 g) per day.

Children: Children's doses are usually based on body weight (20 mg to 40 mg per kg daily given in two or three divided doses) and are usually given in liquid form with or without food.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is very important that this medication be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Finish all of this medication, even if you start to feel better. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

What form(s) does PMS-Cefaclor come in?

PMS-Cefaclor is available as capsules or as a liquid.

Capsules:
250 mg: Each purple and white, opaque capsule contains cefaclor 250 mg.
500 mg: Each purple and grey, opaque capsule contains cefaclor 500 mg.
Nonmedicinal ingredients: cornstarch, gelatin, FD&C Blue No. 1, FD&C Red No. 3, magnesium stearate, silicone, titanium dioxide, and iron oxide.

Liquid:
125 mg: Each 5 mL dose of strawberry-flavoured suspension contains cefaclor 125 mg (25 mg/mL).
250 mg: Each 5 mL dose of strawberry-flavoured suspension contains cefaclor 250 mg (50 mg/mL).
375 mg: Each 5 mL dose of strawberry-flavoured suspension contains cefaclor 375 mg (75 mg/mL).
Nonmedicinal ingredients: cornstarch, sodium lauryl sulfate, silicone, sucrose (3 g/5 mL), xantham gum, methylcellulose, FD&C Red No. 40, and artificial strawberry flavour.

Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

Who should NOT take PMS-Cefaclor?

Anyone who is allergic to cefaclor or any of the cephalosporin antibiotics should not take this medication.

People allergic to penicillin should take this medication with caution as they have an increased risk of being allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics.
