How does Duricef work? What will it do for me?
Cefadroxil is an antibiotic that belongs to the family of medications known as cephalosporins. It is used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria. It helps to kill or control the growth of bacteria that may cause infections of the lung, throat, skin, or bladder.
Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.
How should I use Duricef?
Adults: The recommended adult dose of cefadroxil is 1 g to 2 g daily in one dose or divided into two doses. The exact dose depends on the condition being treated. It may be taken with or without food; taking it with food may reduce the chances of stomach upset.
Children: The recommended dose for children is 30 mg per kg of body weight daily in 2 divided doses.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is very important that this medication be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Finish all of this medication, even if you start to feel better. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
What form(s) does Duricef come in?
Duricef® is no longer being manufactured for sale in Canada. For brands that may still be available, search under cefadroxil. This article is being kept available for reference purposes only. If you are using this medication, speak with your doctor or pharmacist for information about your treatment options.
Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.
Who should NOT take Duricef?
Anyone allergic to cefadroxil or any of the cephalosporin antibiotics should not take this medicine.
People allergic to penicillin should take this medication with caution as they have an increased risk of being allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics.
