How does Apo-Lisinopril work? What will it do for me?

Lisinopril belongs to a class of medications called ACE inhibitors. It is used for the treatment of high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It works by relaxing blood vessels and helping the heart to pump blood that carries oxygen to the different parts of the body more efficiently. It is also used immediately after a heart attack in order to reduce the risk of having another heart attack.

Your doctor may choose to use a medication for conditions other than the ones listed here. If you're unsure why you are taking this medication, contact your doctor.

How should I use Apo-Lisinopril?

The recommended adult dose of lisinopril ranges from 2.5 mg to 40 mg daily, depending on the condition being treated. It is taken in one daily dose with or without food. People who take other medications that lower blood pressure (e.g., diuretics) or people who have kidney disease may need lower doses. It may take up to two weeks to see the full effects of the medication.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important that this medication be taken regularly and exactly as prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
