How does Apo-Nitrofurantoin work? What will it do for me?

Nitrofurantoin belongs to the class of medications called antibiotics. It is used for the treatment of urinary tract infections or bladder infections caused by certain types of bacteria. It helps to eliminate the symptoms of urinary tract infections such as burning, pain, frequent urination, and a constant urge to urinate.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

How should I use Apo-Nitrofurantoin?

The recommended dose of this medication for adults and children over 12 years old is 100 mg twice daily. Nitrofurantoin should be taken with food or milk to reduce the risk of stomach upset.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is very important that this medication be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Finish all of this medication, even if you start to feel better. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

What form(s) does Apo-Nitrofurantoin come in?

50 mg
Each round, yellow, biconvex, scored tablet contains nitrofurantoin 50 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate and microcrystalline cellulose.

100 mg
Each round, yellow, biconvex, scored tablet contains nitrofurantoin 100 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate and microcrystalline cellulose.

Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

Who should NOT take Apo-Nitrofurantoin?

This medication should not be used by:

  • anyone with a significantly reduced kidney function pregnant women during labour and delivery, or when the onset of labour is imminent infants under one month of age anyone allergic to nitrofurantoin or to any of the ingredients of the medication
