How does Percodan work? What will it do for me?

This combination medication contains oxycodone and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). It is used for the relief of mild to moderately severe pain, including conditions associated with fever or inflammation.

Your doctor may choose to use this medication for other conditions not listed here. If you're unsure why you are taking this medication, contact your doctor.

How should I use Percodan?

The recommended dose of ASA - oxycodone varies according to age and circumstances.

Adults: The recommended adult dose is 1 full-strength tablet or 1 or 2 half-strength tablets every six hours as needed.

Adolescents: The dosage for adolescents 12 years and older is one-half of a half-strength tablet every six hours as needed. The full-strength tablets should not be given to children or adolescents.

Children: For children 6 to 12 years old, the dosage is one-quarter of a half-strength tablet every six hours as needed. This medication is not recommended for children under 6 years of age.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

This medication should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. This medication has the potential for being abused and for becoming habit forming and should be taken only as needed for pain unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.

If your doctor has told you to take this medication on a regular basis and you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

What form(s) does Percodan come in?

Each yellow-coloured, biconvex tablet, one side bisected and embossed with "PERCODAN" and the other side blank, contains oxycodone HCl 5 mg and ASA 325 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: cornstarch, D&C Yellow No. 10 Lake, FD&C Yellow No. 6 Lake and microcrystalline cellulose. Lactose-, sodium- and tartrazine-free.

Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

Who should NOT take Percodan?

This medication should not be taken by anyone who:

  • has status asthmaticus (unresponsive asthma)
  • has pre-existing respiratory depression or convulsive (seizure) states
  • has an allergy to oxycodone, ASA, or any of the ingredients of the medication
  • has a history of blood clotting problems
  • takes the medication, warfarin
  • has a history of stomach ulcers or duodenal ulcers
  • has severe anemia
  • is in the last three months of pregnancy or is nursing
