Fertility

Not convinced? Get a second opinion about your fertility.

So you've been to your family doctor, told them your story, and they gave you the equivalent of a pat on the back and said you're fine - nothing to worry about, go home, relax, and enjoy trying. But what if you're not convinced, or have some questions that you feel weren't answered?

Your right to a second opinion

The most important thing to know is that you have a right to a second opinion. Let your doctor know that you would like to investigate further and ask for a referral to another doctor or fertility clinic (find a fertility clinic near you). They may refer you to another doctor in their office, but if you don't feel comfortable talking to a doctor working in the same practice, ask for a referral to a doctor a bit further removed.

Your right to a second opinion holds true for this or any other health matter. Remember - you know your body best and there is no one more invested in your health than you. Don't be concerned about being labeled a difficult patient - you need to have your questions answered and all avenues explored.

Obtaining a second opinion is especially critical if you feel like you are running out of time. Maybe you've been trying to get pregnant for more than a year (or more than 6 months if you are over 35). Maybe you are over 35 years old and would prefer not to wait any longer to have matters investigated.

Your doctor should respect and support your request for a second opinion - and if they don't, perhaps you should be looking for a doctor who is a better fit with your health management style.
