In other words, it is the amount of energy (measured in calories) used by your body to perform basic functions such as breathing, keeping the heart beating, and maintaining body temperature. The BMR is influenced by several factors including age, gender, weight, dieting, exercise, and environment temperature.

So why should you know your BMR? If you know your BMR, you can determine the total number of calories you would burn on an average day- this is called your active metabolic rate (AMR). Knowing your BMR and AMR can help you plan weight maintenance and safe weight loss or gain.
